William Shakespeares Twelfth Night William Shakespeare was baptised on the 26th April 1564, and as it was the tradition for children to be taken to the church for this only a few days after birth, April 23rd has been traditionally held as his actual birthday. It also fits relatively nicely for English person to be born on St. Georges Day as this represents England. He was born in Stratford upon Avon. In 1601, near the middle of Shakespeares career, it is assumed he wrote the play Twelfth Night. Generally critics measured it to be one of Shakespeares greatest comedies alongside with plays for instance as you like it, much ado about nothing, and a midsummer nights dream.†¦show more content†¦The first act in scene reveals to the audience much detailed information about Orsino and Olivia, the two main protagonists. The opening of this scene is situated in the Duke Orsinos palace. Orsino is the duke of Illyria, where this romantic comedy is located. Orsino is very dilapidated and in a depressing low state, as he is seriously love sick. He is intensely in love with Olivia a rich countess O when mine eyes did see olivia first, methought she purgd the air of pestilence, that instant was I turned into a hart, and my desires like fell and cruel hounds, Eer since pursue me. He has been distributing messages to Olivia through messengers, proclaiming his love for her. She refuse s to love Orsino as she is in mourning for seven years over the loss of her dead brother. Orsino is a duke who tremendously enjoys the thought of being in love, having someone for him to love and for someone to love him back, but Olivias love is unrequited for him. Give me excess of it that surfeiting, the appetite may sicken, and so die.
